Cruising Georgian Bay –August 15, 2005 We left the "Looper" Rendezvous in Penetanguishene on July 22 and have spent our time since then in Georgian Bay with its 30,000 Islands. We began by heading 146 nautical miles to the northwest in two long days of great sailing to attend the Great Lakes Cruising Club Wilderness Rally at the northwest end of Georgian Bay. Jim had organized this event in past years and it was fun to attend and surprise people with our return to one of our favorite cruising areas. After the Rally we stopped in Little Current to re-provision and then spent two weeks on northern Georgian Bay. The French River, here, is the route the Voyageurs used on their passage from Montreal to Lake Superior -- Champlain saw this shoreline in 1615! There are few cottages and many areas where there are no soundings on the chart. We got into several inlets that we had not attempted in the past and spent a great deal of time in the dinghy exploring the vast waterways that lead away from the coast. We went as far east as Britt, Ontario where we had a one-night stopover before more exploring both east and west of Killarney. Currently we are back in Little Current and will be in the North Channel for the next several weeks. We expect to return to Duncan Bay in September and make some decisions about where we'll spend the winter. Bobbie and Jim |
